Lakemba Public School library is the information and resource centre for our school community. The library is on the top floor of Block B and contains the library collection.
General information
Things that should be made note of at the school library:
- It is open from 8:30 am to 3:30 pm Monday to Thursday.
- Teachers may book in classes and students also have access, at recess and lunchtime.
- Kindergarten to Year 1 are allowed to borrow up to 1 book at a time.
- Years 2 to 3 are allowed to borrow up to 3 items at a time (the loan period is for one week)
- Items can be reserved and renewed up to 3 times.
- Students are encouraged to return items promptly to ensure ongoing borrowing privileges.
- All classes are given an introduction to the library and information skills by the teacher librarian and are also given lessons in research skills.
- The teacher librarian includes displays to enhance student engagement with curriculum and holds Book Week celebrations and reading encouragement events such as the 'national simultaneous story time', the 'premier's reading challenge' and the 'Kids Own Australian Literature Awards' (KOALA) awards annually.
Information and technological resources
The library's collection contains over 20,000 items, including:
- fiction and non-fiction books (also digital format)
- a picture book section (also ebooks)
- a reference section
- a large collection of readers
- teacher resources
- magazines
- international competitions materials
- teacher's journals (online and some hard copies).
Students have access to networked computers. All provide access to the online library catalogue, the internet and collaborative resources shared intranet location.
The digital library available through the student portal has access to Links4Learning; a collection of web resources for students and teachers, graded and subject indexed and a complete digital catalogue of all our school library resources.
