Walking to School

Walking to and from school is a great way to spend time with your child and encourage safe and healthy behaviours.

Here are a few tips to help keep your child safer as a pedestrian:
  • Plan, practise and talk with your child about being alert in the road environment.
  • Until your child is at least 8 years old, always hold their hand, as they can be easily distracted. Children need your help to spot dangers.
  • Then, up until at least 10 years old, supervise your child very closely, and hold their hand when crossing the road.
  • Always use pedestrian crossings where possible.
  • Meet your child near the school gate. Never call them from across the road.
  • Explain why the places you have chosen to cross are the safest. Talk to them about why they should stop, look, listen, think before crossing a driveway, road or car park.

We are fortunate to have a pedestrian crossing in front of our school on Alice Street South. There is a School Crossing Supervisor on most mornings and afternoons who assists families to cross the road safely.

Driving and Parking

The start and end of the school day are busy times for pedestrians and drivers outside schools. That is why you need to take extra care in 40km/h school zones.

When driving and parking near our school, please:

Drive safely
  • Slow down to 40km/h in the school zone and stay aware of crossings.
  • At a supervised crossing, follow the directions of the School Crossing Supervisor. They help manage traffic and assist children to use the crossings on roads near and outside of schools.
  • Always give way to pedestrians particularly when entering and leaving driveways.
Park legally and safely
  • Parking signs are planned with children’s safety in mind.
  • Park safely and legally, even if it means walking further to the school gate.
  • Always park and turn legally around the school. U-turns and three-point turns are dangerous.
  • Never double park as it puts children at risk.
  • Never park in a bus zone or in the school bus bay. Don’t park across the school driveway or the entrance to the school car park.
  • Make sure your child uses the ‘Safety Door’ (rear kerb side door) to get in and out of the vehicle.
  • Model safe and considerate behaviour for your child as they learn from you.
