Starting Kindergarten
Starting primary school is a big step for children and families. Our school runs orientation and transition activities to help your child feel ready for Kindergarten and to support you as parents and carers.
We are excited to welcome new families to our school community. At Lakemba Public School, we are proud of our strong focus on literacy and numeracy, giving students the best start.
Read the Getting ready for primary school guide for detailed tips and checklists.

Before your child starts Kindergarten
Enrolment interview
Before your child begins, all families meet with our principal, Mrs Maakaroun. You will receive a school welcome pack, which will include details of the dates for the Kindergarten Orientation and Transition program. This is a time to share important information about your child, including:
- interests and strengths
- medical conditions or allergies
- learning support needs
- family circumstances.
We want every child to feel safe, supported and included in school life. This interview is the start of a wonderful partnership between home and school. Mrs Maakaroun enjoys meeting all of our lovely new students.
Kindergarten Orientation and Transition Program
Our orientation and transition sessions help children become familiar with our school, by:
- meeting teachers and classmates
- exploring classrooms and playgrounds
- practising simple routines.
Parents and carers are invited to join information sessions to learn about daily schedules, uniforms, lunches and communication. You will also receive an information pack to support your child's start to school. The children should wear play clothes and closed-in shoes as the uniform is not required for these sessions.
If you need an interpreter, let us know.

Getting ready at home
You can help your child get ready by encouraging independence and routines. Let your child try:
- packing and unpacking their school bag
- opening and closing their lunch box or containers
- dressing themselves
- going to the bathroom by themself and washing their hands
- writing their first name
- following simple routines at home.

What to expect in Kindergarten
Learning and Development
Kindergarten follows the NSW curriculum. Children build early skills in literacy, numeracy, creative arts, health and physical activity, science and technology. Learning through play also supports social, emotional and academic growth.
Daily routines
Children learn routines, such as lining up, entering the classroom, having recess and lunch breaks and moving safely around the school. Teachers guide children as they settle in but practising at home helps.
Best Start Assessment
At the start of the year, all Kindergarten children take part in the Best Start Assessment. This is a friendly, one-on-one activity where teachers learn about your child’s literacy and numeracy skills. It is not a test and needs no preparation.
